One of the most common visual formats in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 is the bar chart. In this guide, I will show you a sample bar chart, explain how to read it, and provide a complete Band 9 sample answer.

Households with Internet Access (%)
| Country | 2000 | 2010 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Korea | 20% | 80% | 95% |
| Japan | 15% | 70% | 90% |
| UK | 10% | 65% | 88% |
| USA | 25% | 60% | 85% |

How to Read the Chart
Before writing, take two minutes to study the chart carefully:
What does it show? The percentage of households with internet access in six countries across three time periods: 2000, 2010, and 2020.
What are the units? Percentages (%)
What are the main trends?
- Internet access increased dramatically in all six countries over the 20-year period
- South Korea consistently had the highest percentage, rising from 20% to 95%
- India had the lowest percentage but showed significant growth from just 1% to 35%
- Developed countries (South Korea, Japan, UK, USA, Germany) all reached above 80% by 2020
- The gap between developed and developing countries narrowed but remained significant
Band 9 Sample Answer
Introduction:
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households with internet access in six countries — South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and India — across three years: 2000, 2010, and 2020.
Overview:
Overall, internet access increased significantly in all six countries over the two decades. South Korea consistently had the highest percentage of connected households, while India had the lowest, although it showed the most dramatic rate of growth in proportional terms.
Body Paragraph 1:
In 2000, the United States had the highest proportion of households with internet access at 25%, followed by South Korea at 20%. Japan and Germany had similar figures at around 15% and 12% respectively, while the UK stood at just 10%. India had by far the lowest level of connectivity, with only 1% of households having access to the internet.
Body Paragraph 2:
By 2020, the situation had changed dramatically. South Korea overtook all other countries, reaching 95% household internet access. Japan and the UK followed closely at 90% and 88% respectively, while the USA and Germany recorded 85% and 82%. India, despite showing the most substantial proportional growth — rising from 1% to 35% — remained significantly behind the other five countries, with only about one in three households having internet access.
Conclusion:
In summary, while all six countries experienced considerable growth in household internet access between 2000 and 2020, the data reveals a clear divide between developed nations, which achieved near-universal connectivity, and developing nations, which continue to lag behind.

Practice Tip
Create your own bar chart practice by finding real data on websites like the World Bank or OECD. Make a simple chart, set a 20-minute timer, and write a full response. Compare your answer to the structure above and note where you could improve your vocabulary or organisation.
Remember: the key to a high-scoring Task 1 answer is not describing every single number. Instead, identify the most important trends, group related information together, and use precise vocabulary to describe changes and comparisons.
