Advantages and disadvantages essays are a frequent question type in IELTS Writing Task 2. You will be presented with a topic — often a trend or development — and asked to discuss its positive and negative aspects. Some questions also ask you to decide whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

In this guide, I will show you how to structure these essays and provide a complete Band 9 sample answer.

Two Types of Advantages and Disadvantages Questions

It is important to recognise which type of question you are answering, because the structure differs slightly:

Type 1: “What are the advantages and disadvantages of…?” This question simply asks you to discuss both sides. You do not need to give your opinion.

Type 2: “Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?” This question asks you to discuss both sides AND give a clear opinion on which side is stronger.

Always read the question carefully to determine which type you are dealing with.

The Structure

Introduction (2-3 sentences)

Paraphrase the question and, if required, state your overall position. For example: “The rise of remote working has transformed the modern workplace, bringing both significant benefits and notable challenges. In my view, the advantages of this shift outweigh the drawbacks.”

Body Paragraph 1: Advantages (5-7 sentences)

Present the main advantages, explain them, and support them with examples.

Body Paragraph 2: Disadvantages (5-7 sentences)

Present the main disadvantages, explain them, and support them with examples.

Conclusion (2 sentences)

Summarise the main points and, if required, restate your opinion on which side is stronger.

Band 9 Sample Essay

Question: “In many countries, more and more people are choosing to work from home rather than commuting to an office. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?”

Introduction:

The shift towards remote working has accelerated dramatically in recent years, fundamentally changing how millions of people approach their professional lives. While this trend presents certain challenges, I believe the benefits it offers to both employees and employers are considerably more significant.

Body Paragraph 1 — Advantages:

One of the most obvious advantages of remote working is the improvement in work-life balance. Employees no longer spend hours each day commuting, which frees up time for family, hobbies, and rest. This flexibility can significantly reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Furthermore, remote working offers substantial financial benefits: employees save money on transport and meals, while companies reduce their overheads on office space. Perhaps most importantly, remote work allows companies to recruit talent from anywhere in the world, rather than being limited to candidates who live within commuting distance of a particular city.

Body Paragraph 2 — Disadvantages:

Nevertheless, remote working is not without its drawbacks. One significant concern is the potential for isolation and loneliness, as employees miss the social interaction and camaraderie of an office environment. This can affect mental health and, paradoxically, reduce job satisfaction. Another issue is the blurring of boundaries between work and personal life: without a clear separation between the office and the home, many remote workers find it difficult to switch off, leading to longer hours and burnout. Finally, collaboration and creativity can suffer when teams are not physically together, as spontaneous conversations and informal brainstorming sessions are harder to replicate online.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, while remote working can lead to isolation and difficulties in maintaining work-life boundaries, the benefits of improved flexibility, reduced costs, and access to global talent are far more substantial. On balance, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Giving an opinion when it is not asked for. If the question only asks “what are the advantages and disadvantages?”, do not spend a whole paragraph on your opinion. Focus on the two sides.

Not giving an opinion when it is asked for. If the question asks “do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?”, you must state clearly which side is stronger.

Unbalanced discussion. Give roughly equal attention to both sides. Do not spend four sentences on advantages and only one on disadvantages.

Confusing advantages with benefits to you personally. Keep your discussion general and objective. Do not write about your own situation.

With practice and a clear structure, advantages and disadvantages essays can become a reliable source of marks. Good luck!
